Anyone can contract a toenail fungus, but it is more common in older adults. That's because older nails become dry and brittle and can crack, allowing the fungus to enter the toe more easily. This condition also tends to be more common in men than women.
Those with a weakened immune system, diabetes, or poor circulation are more susceptible to toenail fungus. It can also start from the same fungus that causes athlete’s foot, and spread below the surface.
A toenail fungus can spread from one toe to another but is rarely contagious between other people.
The nails may turn yellow, brown, or have a white dot that increases in size. Toenail fungus may also cause a foul smell and pain in one or several toes.
Once the diagnosis is confirmed, a podiatrist prescribes an anti-fungal medication to treat toenail fungus. Typical treatments include:
Anti-Fungal Cream
Medicated Nail Polish
Oral Prescription Medication
MLS Laser Therapy
Remy Class IV Laser
If the infection has caused severe nail damage, it may be necessary for the doctor to remove the toenail.
